As you know, Ego being enemy #1 is one of my most important poker tips.
I guess I should say being aware of Ego as the biggest threat is one of my most important poker tips.
I’ll give it to you straight. There will come a time in your poker career where you tell yourself that you’re sick of someone pushing you around. You’re then going to overplay your cards and get into trouble. I hope this doesn’t happen to you, but it seems to be part of a poker player’s journey.
All I can say in an attempt to prevent this is that it’s much better to let the game come to you and to accept what the game gives you. Never force the action. It’s not you vs. another player. It’s you vs. yourself.
Once you realize that your number one threat at the poker table isn’t someone else but yourself, you’re going to have a lot more success. You’re going to stop caring what other people think, you’re going to play tighter, and you’re going to win more chips in traditional poker games and go deeper in poker tournaments.
Bottom line: Let the game come to you, don’t force the action due to impatience and/or wanting to do something unique. Sit back and wait. If you do that, you will win a few pots, which will then allow the creative side to kick in. But don’t get too creative. This is how to win at poker.
