How to Win Poker Tournaments

What is a Satellite Poker Tournament?

A Satellite poker tournament is where you pay a small buy-in in an attempt to win an entry to play in a bigger buy-in tournament. This can be a little confusing, but it’s actually simple.

Let’s say the Main Event at a WSOP Circuit stop is $1,700. That’s a lot of money to pay and there is no way you’re going to take that chance. However, you really want to play in this event.

There is another option. You can play in a $250 Satellite tournament. The WSOPC might take 1 of every 7 players.

Therefore, you’re not playing to win the tournament. You’re just playing for a shot at getting into the bigger event, which can pay more than $150,000 for 1st place.

The WSOPC is happy because they’re netting $50 off every seven players in the tournament. You’re happy because you have a shot at $150,000 for $250.

If you play a Satellite tournament, focus on patience. Remember, you don’t need to win the event.
