    1. desperate for cash
    2. maybe addicts of some sort, gambling…
    3. not desperate, but have an item they know not the real value
    4. not desperate, and do not care about the item
    5. Or they got along famously with Mr. Brown.

Eric Clapton supposed to meet Jimi in bar in London on 17th September 1970 and hi brought him a white lefty brand new stratocaster, but Jimi stayed at his apartment with girlfriend, and the rest is tragic history. You can find this info in Eric Clapton biography book.
